Friday Night Lights: Just a Tiny Bit Awkward.

So Friday Night Lights was last Friday on the 7th of April, and it was really amazing, yet really awkward (at least for this reporter).

It was my first Friday Night Lights ever, and the best part is I got to participate in it, I had never been to Friday Night Lights before that night, which made the event really exciting and really fun.

If you’re here next year, go to Friday Night Lights, you won’t regret it.

Although Friday Night Lights was amazing, it was also really awkward due to my brother Nikhil, being on the Varsity baseball team.

While my brother was waiting for their game to start, he and his friends were watching me fail at fielding because I couldn’t catch fly balls. The name pretty much explains itself: fly balls are balls that the batter hit which go way high in the air and curve down. You try to catch them, but the thing is, being hit with a softball hurts. Really bad. So maybe I’m also a bit afraid of getting hit by the ball, which I shouldn’t be, but let’s move on from talking about my abilities to catch a softball, to how I managed to write this article.

Because I had to take pictures for this article, and I also had to do softball and warm up and get into my uniform and all that, fellow DM reporter Hershey and I split up all the sports that were going on between us. She would take pictures of half the sports and I would take pictures of the other half of the sports, and then we would write two different articles with two different perspectives on Friday Night Lights. We do it all for our loyal readers!

That plan backfired a tiny bit, well at least the photo taking part did. A lot of the sports that we were each supposed to take pictures of like ASIAC basketball and swimming, took place during our softball game. Speaking of our softball game, it was very short due to the other team, we were going up against, being half an hour late so we didn’t get to play very much.

And for baseball, it was a bit hard to take pictures through the netting and obviously we couldn’t get onto the field to take pictures because we would most likely get hit by a baseball, and then taking pictures for Friday Night Lights wouldn’t be the biggest problem we would have had.

So we didn’t get many photos of those sports, but we did manage to get photos of MESAC Badminton, where I saw some familiar faces from high school like Rhea Chadha and Neil Blomquist from 9th grade as well as two fellow eighth graders, Harsh Jain and Varun Seshadri. Hopefully next time we’ll have more 8th graders in badminton, but that’s only if track and field doesn’t steal them all away first.

The number of people who tried out for track and field is honestly so overwhelming, I couldn’t even count. The people who made the track team worked really hard to make it to the team. 8th Grader Rino Hamanishi, made the track team, and she told me, “I thought that I wouldn’t get in because I was slow at running and didn’t get the best time-trials as others, but I went to every practice and worked on my skills even when others were chatting.”

Rino worked really hard to make the track team. At the beginning, she knew nothing about proper track and field and she started out as a beginner, but now, she’s doing one of the hardest events there is in track and field, 400 metre hurdles.

This shows perseverance, and how if you put your mind to something you really can do it.

Now don’t get me wrong, track and field is an amazing sport, but maybe next time if some of those people who tried out for track and field could join softball, baseball, or badminton, as we’re all lacking numbers.

So this Friday Night Lights was a special one, and it might have been my last, and I’m not even going to explain why I don’t know if this was my last because if I did you would probably stop reading this, but if I’m here next year I’m definitely going to all of the Friday Night Lights, even if I’m not participating.

Also going again will give me the opportunity to eat more food – the food was one of the best parts of the event. I had a taco in a bag, I had a brownie with ice cream, I had a hot dog. I’m pretty sure I ate almost everything there, but it was so good, I couldn’t resist.

If you’re here next year, go to Friday Night Lights, you won’t regret it.
