It is the end of the school year which means that we will soon have to say goodbye to a few of our favorite teachers. This year, 17 middle school teachers are leaving and over the next 15 school days, The Direct Message will post an ‘Exit Interview’ that we conducted with each of these educators.

Mr. Kirk McDavitt

What will you miss most about AES?
The unpredictable (and often inspiring) energy of the students.
What is the best part about being a teacher at AES? The eagerness of the students to learn and tackle difficult concepts.
What are your plans for next year and what are your thoughts about this next step?
I plan to take a couple years off from teaching and work on writing a novel. I’ll give myself the charge of writing 1,000 words per day, and in about six months I should have a draft that will be submitted to publishers. I’m also interested in learning about worm farming and bee keeping. My wife, Ms. G from the elementary school, will be the technology coordinator for the ES at the American International School of Bucharest in Romania.
How do you hope your students and colleagues will remember you?
As a kind and caring individual who always considered different perspectives.
What message would you like to leave for the community at AES?
Keep making the world around you a better place for others.

What will you remember about Mr. McDavitt?
I will remember reading the Feed with the class. It was actually really fun and much better than I had expected.
What makes Mr. McDavitt unique?
Mr. McDavitt’s class is kind of free and fun but we still do our work and learn stuff.
What is a funny or memorable story that you have about Mr. McDavitt?
Whenever the MNM team came to our class to pick up recycled paper, we would kick them out and scream “LEAVE WE DONT WANT YOU HERE WE DONT BELIEVE IN RECYCLING”. It was mean, but it was kind of fun. Also, Mr.Mcdavitt would randomly show us videos if two giraffes fighting or a seahorse giving birth. It was interesting and kind of weird… We had the best humanities class.

What will you remember about Mr. McDavitt?
I will remember about how he would share his story from his trip to Varanasi, or about the students he had taught few years ago, during an ordinary humanities class, and it was very interesting.
What makes Mr. McDavitt unique?
I think Mr. McDavitt is unique because of his personality and how he is very chill about some things.
What is a funny or memorable story that you have about Mr. McDavitt?
It was very fun when we chase off the mother natures minions when they come to collect the recycling papers and yell at them: “we don’t believe in recycling!”

What will you remember about Mr. McDavitt?
I will remember how fun he was in class, and he would show us videos of him performing with his band or a video that he made of his morning routine and they were really fun to watch
What makes Mr. McDavitt unique?
Something that makes Mr. McDavitt unique is his personality, he is really calm, and collected and he’s also really funny, we can joke around with him in class and he will laugh, and make jokes with us too and he makes class with him really fun.
What is a funny or memorable story that you have about Mr. McDavitt?
A funny story is this one time when he was at a conference and we had a substitute and everybody stopped working just to see him skateboarding on the street.
