We sent a questionnaire to band and strings students and this is what they had to say about their class:
Expressiveness
Band The band offers space for expressiveness through a range of instruments, from brass to woodwinds. However, beginners find it challenging to master techniques like breath control or embouchure. Despite this, band instruments allow for powerful and impactful sound, especially in larger ensembles, giving a chance for students to make bold, expressive music. Since band class offers a wide variety of instruments, students focus on harmonical pieces that include everyone at once and don’t always allow individual expression.
StringsString instruments are highly expressive because of their music allowing for each individual section to get time during a piece to have greater levels of expressiveness. Players can create emotional depth through bowing or plucking. Students said they feel emotionally connected to their instruments and pieces.

Classroom Engagement
Band:Band students enjoy the high-energy environment, and reported various levels of excitement and involvement. While the variety of instruments keeps things fresh, the overall engagement might not be as personal due to the larger instrument group sizes, but despite that, students still enjoy their experience.
Strings: Strings students reported being highly engaged, with many feeling valued and connected to their class. The small group sizes create a strong sense of community, and students are excited to improve and contribute alongside their friends. The dynamic classroom atmosphere physically and mentally creates a deep personal connection to the music and the class.
Musical Pieces
Band:
Band students shared that their music spans a wide range of styles, from harmonious and soothing compositions to upbeat jazz-pop tunes that get everyone happy. They also expressed how much they enjoy their individual involvement in each piece, whether it's playing a unique solo, or contributing to a section. The students mentioned that this sense of personal participation not only allows them to show their talents but also creates a connection with the music and each other.
Strings:
Strings students expressed they enjoyed their pieces. Students get to choose a piece they want to play at the MS showcases, shows in which art, and music classes perform. No matter what, string pieces are always enjoyable both to play and to hear.
Conclusion:
Both the band and the strings offer unique opportunities. The band plays bold, loud music with a great range of instruments, and the strings offer a more intimate and expressive experience, ideal for students who enjoy emotional depth and subtlety in their playing. No matter what you choose for your first music electives, be reassured you will have a great experience, highly professional mentors, and a sincerely appreciative audience during the showcases.
